Still from the movie “Basic Instinct”
There are so many myths around laser hair removal that we are completely confused regarding what we can believe in and what we can’t. Therefore, we turned to an expert and asked Gunay Novruzova, a dermatovenerologist and Cosmobay laser hair removal specialist, to debunk the main misconceptions regarding the most popular hair removal procedure.

Laser hair removal can cause cancer
Still from the movie “Lovelace”
This misconception is caused by a misunderstanding of the word “ray”. The body receives radiation through research methods such as computed tomography or x-rays. They are indeed harmful if you exceed the maximum permissible dose defined by WHO. A laser beam is not radiation, but light waves that are well absorbed by melanin (hair pigment), while skin cells practically do not absorb such light.
How does a laser actually work? As a result of the penetration of light and heat flow, melanin absorbs light energy, heats up and destroys the matrix cells (growth zone of the hair) that contain it and destroys the blood and lymphatic vessels that feed the hair follicle. After a few weeks, the hair shaft with the dead root falls out. Laser hair removal does not affect the hormonal system, does not affect internal organs and does not disrupt biochemical processes in the skin. In addition, it is approved by the Ministry of Health, the American FDA Association and the European CE Association.
Laser is painful
An established myth from the times when old models of devices were used, and the sensations were really not very pleasant. Modern lasers are equipped with a powerful skin cooling system, which completely eliminates discomfort. You will only feel warmth and a slight tingling sensation – this is a sign that the laser beam is affecting the hair follicle. Moreover, during the procedure, specialists always listen to the client’s feelings and individually adjust the power of the device.
Laser hair removal is not suitable for blondes
Still from the film “Blonde on Air”
The laser really does not always “take” blond hair, because it contains little melanin, a pigment that protects us from ultraviolet radiation and colors the skin, hair and eyes. The laser beam is “focused” on the hair pigment. As a result, the follicle becomes very hot and then destroyed. The more pigment a hair contains, the more energy it can absorb and the better it will break down later.
Therefore, laser may not always work on red and blond hair. But modern devices, for example, Magic One, “take” even very light hair. It will take a little more sessions, but the hair will be gone by 60-70%. Exceptions are total natural blonde, gray or vellus hair.
You cannot do the procedure if you have moles.
Still from the film “Death Proof”
The laser beam has nothing to do with ultraviolet, so it does not have a harmful effect on the mole (nevus). It is not able to start the process of changing a benign neoplasm. However, nevi contain a large amount of melanin, due to which they absorb light during the procedure and heat up. Therefore, specialists usually paint over moles without allowing the laser to affect them.
The most expensive hair removal method
The cost of laser hair removal procedures is more expensive than other hair removal methods. But you need to take into account that the latter give short-term results and you need to do them throughout your life – every month or more often. We calculated: laser hair removal saves up to 91 hours of shaving over a lifetime or up to 50 thousand rubles every year on sugaring.
