Debby, strengthens into a storm after making landfall early this morning as a hurricane near Steinhatchee, on the northwest coast of Floridalosing more and more strength in the last few hours, with maximum sustained winds of 110 km/h.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) predicts that Debby, which made landfall early on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane, out of a total of 5 on the Saffir-Simpson scale, will continue to lose strength as it advances, according to a report released today.
However, although the cyclone’s winds will lose intensity, the rains will remain intense, causing flooding in Florida and the same forecast is for what will happen in Georgia and South Carolina, according to a report from the meteorological center based in Miami (USA).
Debby strengthens into a tropical storm
As of Saturday, up to 762 millimeters of rain had been recorded in parts of southeastern Georgia, South Carolina and southeastern North Carolina, unprecedented amounts that will likely lead to “catastrophic flooding.”
Adding to the report is the risk of storm surge, which in northwest Florida could raise sea levels by up to six feet above average.
Debby is moving at about 13 kilometers per hour in a north-northeasterly direction and its forward speed is expected to decrease.
Kamala Harris and her vice presidential candidate will begin their tour this Tuesday
