Debating the Legalization of Cannabis: Addressing Drug-Related Insecurities and Crime in Brussels

On the program “It’s not every day on Sunday” on September 3, the problems of drug-related insecurities were at the heart of the debate. While drug trafficking has increased considerably this year in Brussels, a question arises: should the sale of cannabis be legalized in our country? Around the table, opinions differ.

In Brussels, violence linked to drug trafficking has increased considerably. So much so that, in the ranks of the police, it sounds the alarm. Since the beginning of this year, there have been 6 deaths linked to drug trafficking, compared to 1 or 2 for the year 2022. Faced with such a finding, a question begins to make its way: legalizing or regulating the sale of cannabis might to reduce crime?

A divisive idea

The vice-president, Pierre-Yves Dermagne, offers a solution to reduce the tension around drugs: he wants people to be able to buy cannabis in “adapted spaces”, he explains. So, true or false good idea? Opinions are very divided. For the deputy MR, Aurélie Czekalski, the heart of the problem does not lie in the fact of knowing whether to make this sale legal. “I don’t think the debate is there yet. What matters is safety in the public space. It also means helping people to get out of this trap when they are drug addicts, through rigorous medical monitoring. (…)”, she says.

For Jonathan, a former drug user, this is a bad idea. “When you know what it really does to the brain and the body, there is already alcohol that does quite a lot of damage, I think it is adding a layer. (…) Since I know what cannabis actually does in general, I don’t think it’s a good idea, especially in terms of public health, mental health (…)”.

On the side of the Minister-President of the Government of the Brussels-Capital Region, Rudi Vervoort, it is an idea to be explored. “These products must be approved and controlled. (…) I think we underestimate, in this country, the consumption of narcotics, in all social circles. (…) For me, you have to separate the consumer from the legal activity. The activity must remain legal, the dealers must be prosecuted. The consumer must be understood differently (…)”.
