Uzbekistan A court has convicted 23 people in the case of death of 68 children due to cough syrup mixed with harmful elements.

The Tashkent City Court ruled on Monday that the defendants were guilty of crimes ranging from tax evasion, selling substandard or counterfeit drugs, abuse of office, negligence, forgery to bribery.

The accused have been sent to prison for two to 20 years.

Last year, about 18 children died due to adulterated medicines.

India The adulteration was detected in a cough syrup manufactured by Marion Biotech and distributed by Qarmex Medical in Uzbekistan.

A World Health Organization (WHO) study found two Marion Biotech cough syrups ‘substandard’.

The report found unacceptable amounts of the two elements diethylene glycol and/or ethylene glycol. Both are toxic to humans and can be fatal if ingested.

Although the company has denied allegations of adulteration, India’s health ministry has halted its production and the food safety department in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh has suspended the company’s license.
