TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — The death toll in a double suicide bombing claimed by the Islamic State extremist group in Iran has risen to at least 91 people, state television said Saturday.
Babak Yektaparast, a spokesman for the country’s emergency services, reported the death of an 8-year-old boy and a 67-year-old man who had been injured in the attack, according to the network.
Another 102 people remain hospitalized, 11 of them in critical condition, Yektaparast added.
In Wednesday’s attack, a suicide bomber blew himself up and another followed in his footsteps 20 minutes later, while people and emergency teams tried to help the injured.
The attack occurred in Kerman, regarding 820 kilometers (510 miles) southeast of the capital, Tehran, and targeted a tribute to Gen. Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a 2020 U.S. drone strike while commanding the Quds Force in Baghdad, Iraq.
Iran’s Intelligence Ministry said Friday that one of the two suicide bombers was a citizen of Tajikistan and reported the arrest of 11 people linked to the attack.
