Kinshasa, March 19, 2024 – Regarding the lifting of the moratorium on the death penalty in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the European Union (EU) has expressed its firm and unequivocal opposition.

In the statement by its spokesperson, the European Union believes that the death penalty makes any judicial error irreversible.

“The EU reaffirms its firm and unequivocal opposition to the use of the death penalty, at any time and in all circumstances. Capital punishment violates the inalienable right to life and is incompatible with human dignity. The death penalty does not have an effective deterrent effect once morest crime and makes any miscarriage of justice irreversible.”wrote the spokesperson for the European Union, who also expressed his firm desire to continue working towards the abolition of the death penalty in the few countries that apply it, in accordance with the growing global trend. to abandon this type of sentence.
