Death of John Lennon: “There was something of my youth that died”, according to Marc Déry

Marc Déry’s hope of seeing the Beatles reunite once more literally collapsed when John Lennon died on December 8, 1980.

“There was something from my youth that died at the same time. I wasn’t a little Beatles fan, I was a bit sickly. I would read all regarding them and learn all of their songs. When I was not with my friends, I just listened to that, ”he confided to the microphone of Richard Martineau at QUB radio.

Accompanied by his guitar during his visit to the studio, the singer-songwriter even sang a few pieces by the illustrious singer.

His affection for the group is not new. He started worshiping them when he was nine years old. At that time, his favorite member was Paul McCartney. Subsequently, he set his sights on John Lennon and Georges Harrison. As for Ringo Starr, he always loved him, but for other reasons.

“John Lennon was the most instinctive. He was not the most beautiful human being, but for his art and his music he was the one who became the most interesting. His voice and his aggressiveness came to get me in addition to his little revolutionary side.

When asked who was the best singer in the quartet, Mr. Déry replied that Paul and John each have a great voice in popular music.

“It was two competitors. They challenged each other. When Lennon came up with a cool song, Paul came up with another one to respond to that. When John came in with Strawberry Fields, Paul did Penny Lane,” he said.

Marc Déry recalled that in the song “Come Together”, Lennon said “shoot me”. Ironically, he was riddled with bullets in front of the Dakota Building in New York, his place of residence.

Although he studied music at school, the artist says what influenced him the most was the Beatles way of making music.
