Death from Salmonella: Kebistan the focus of the investigations

It should be clarified whether the man had contracted the poisoning because of a chicken kebab from an Upper Carinthian kebab stand. Prosecutor Tina Frimmel-Hesse confirmed a corresponding report by the “Kleine Zeitung” on Tuesday.

The investigation is just beginning, the spokeswoman said. She said a link between the man’s death and the salmonella contamination of the meat had to be proven. The public prosecutor is investigating where the operator of the doner kebab stand got the meat from, whether he kept the cold chain and heated the meat sufficiently. If his guilt in the Carinthian’s death can be proven, he would face up to three years in prison for violating food safety and consumer protection laws.

Cases of illness caused by chicken meat from Poland

The case had become public two weeks ago. The kebab meat is said to be a product from Poland, which is suspected of being the cause of outbreaks of salmonella in several EU countries. In Austria there had been a total of 27 people who had fallen ill since February, one of whom was the deceased 63-year-old. According to the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), there have been cases of illness from said chicken meat from Poland in all federal states, except for Tyrol.
