The death certificate of Simón Bolívar was found in the Cathedral of the Diocese of Santa Marta, according to historian William Hernández Ospino.

The document was kept in the sacristy, so it had not been found in more than 190 years. But its location was possible through an exploration in the religious temple.

The search was led by Hernández Ospino, who in turn received authorization from former bishop Ugo Puccini.

The academic specified that this finding is historical and has great significance.

He explained that he found the paper that shows details of the Liberator’s death in “the safe embedded in a wall, and we immediately called a mason to scratch the wall, and an expert who finally opened it.”

Inside there was a book of death certificates that was sent to the city of Bogotá to be restored.

In this review process, it was possible to establish that the official record of the death of the liberator Simón Bolívar was in the hacienda of the Quinta de San Pedro Alejandrino.
