Around 4:30 a.m. on the night of Friday to Saturday, a person tried to force access to an entrance to the Rogier metro station in Brussels. His upper body got stuck as the door opened automatically. Despite the intervention of the firefighters who carried out an extrication, the attempt at resuscitation did not work.
This is the fourth case of a person stuck in one of the Stib’s automatic shutters since last March. “As I feared, there was finally a death,” commented fire department spokesman Walter Derieuw.
Asked regarding this phenomenon, Stib explains that people have always tried to force access to stations, but the transport company does not explain the upsurge in cases. “All stations open at the same time with an automated shutter. When there is a blockage, we send a team directly, that’s what has been done.
A Stib agent whom we were able to question sees in these accidents the end of night rounds for certain Stib teams. “These rounds allowed officers to quickly secure people who were sometimes in distress.”
