Cheruvathur (Kasargod): Sandesh Rai, a Nepali national who makes shawarma, and Anas, the manager of a company, have been arrested in connection with the death of a Plus One student following consuming shawarma. Police said the shop owner was abroad. Chandera police arrested them on charges including involuntary manslaughter.

The company was operating without a license. They had applied for the license in January but the website now shows that the application was rejected. The rule is that if the application for a license from the Department of Food Safety is incomplete, the error must be corrected and submitted within 30 days. But officials say the shopkeeper did not do so. The application for the license is displayed in the shop. The discovery was made during an inspection by the Food Safety Department. Samples of shawarma were collected and the establishment was sealed. The shop was found that the shop was not licensed to the Food Security Department. In the evening stones were hurled at the shop. Police forensic experts also visited the spot in the evening.

Minister Veena George directed the Food Safety Commissioner to investigate and submit a report. The district medical officer was also directed to ensure better treatment for those suffering from food poisoning. The minister said action would be taken once morest the institution on the basis of the investigation. Minister MV Govindan, who visited Kanhangad District Hospital, said that the state would conduct extensive inspections to ensure the quality of food items.
