Dealing with Tiger Mosquito Infestation in Alsace: Causes, Impacts, and Prevention

Do you have the impression of being devoured by mosquitoes this summer in Alsace? Do your arms itch from the bites? Know that you are not the only one! While common mosquitoes are not particularly numerous this summer, tiger mosquitoes are present in the two Alsatian departments where they are installed. Not only is their colonization area increasing, but they are also particularly numerous this year. In the district of Neudorf in Strasbourg, some residents give up picnics in parks for fear of bites.

Very localized proliferation zones

The inhabitants of the Neudorf district, in Strasbourg, are divided: some have hardly any bites, others are attacked every day by tiger mosquitoes. Leila has no problem at home, however, in the park a few blocks away, it’s unbearable: “a few days ago I decided to just go to the park to have a picnic, but it was impossible to do it because there were a lot of mosquitoes, it’s hellish. I totally gave up, I’m come back.” A few buildings away, Liliane confirms: she is attacked every night. “When I water the plants in the garden it’s a disaster, explains the retiree, all the mosquitoes fall on me until two or three hours later once more.” She is therefore forced to close all the windows, while some of her neighbors are not particularly stung.

Christelle Bender, technical manager of the Bas-Rhin mosquito control union, talks regarding places “particularly localized”, which may concern certain parts of a district (in Illkirch or around the districts of Cronenbourg and Orangerie, in Strasbourg). What do all these places have in common? “These are well-vegetated neighborhoodsexplains Christelle Bender. The tiger mosquito rests in the vegetation as an adult, so it will favor them in the mineralized neighborhoods of the city center.” Another common point, the most important: stagnant water. “It is absolutely necessary to avoid any container full of water for more than a week, reminds the specialist. We have noticed that the places where the bites are the most important are where we find these containers.” As a reminder, the tiger mosquito, very unpleasant for its bites, is above all a vector of dengue, a viral infection.

The rain favored the births of tiger mosquitoes

This proliferation of tiger mosquitoes can be explained by the weather this summer 2023. Because of the rain that fell at the end of July and at the beginning of August, the births of tiger mosquitoes have multiplied. Christelle Bender, technical manager of the Bas-Rhin mosquito control union, has seen it well: “the rain may have flooded certain breeding sites in urban areas, such as cups or drums for collecting rainwater. The tiger mosquito lays its eggs on the surface of the water, so that the hatching takes place , the egg must be submerged.” According to Christelle Bender, the difference is very visible between the beginning of July and the end of August.
