(CNN) — One of the most anticipated movie trailers of the year arrived during Super Bowl LVIII.
Much has already been said regarding “Deadpool & Wolverine,” in which Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool will join Hugh Jackman, who in turn will return as Wolverine following his last appearance as the sharp-clawed hero in the acclaimed “Logan.” 2017. But until this Sunday little has been seen.
In this first-look trailer, released online following the Super Bowl announcement, Deadpool is joined by “Succession” star Matthew Macfadyen, playing a Time Variance Authority agent named Paradox, according to the official trailer titles.
“This is your chance to be a hero among heroes,” he tells Deadpool.
In a self-aware gesture, Deadpool cheekily sums it up: “I smell what you’re talking regarding, sensei. Your little cinematic universe is regarding to change forever.”
In fact, it will be so.
At the end of the trailer, a sick Deadpool lies on the ground and calls for help. When Jackman’s Wolverine claws come out, Deadpool comically reconsiders that plea for help.
Reynolds appeared as Deadpool, the Marvel comics mutant “mercenary with a mouth,” in 2016’s “Deadpool,” followed by the first sequel two years later.
After those two beloved entries, this three-sequel film, which will be released at the end of July, has a lot at stake.
On the one hand, it will be Disney’s first R-rated MCU (Marvel Cinematic Universe) film, as well as the official entry of the Deadpool character into said universe; until now, it was an offshoot of the X-Men universe that previously lived under the 20th Century Fox umbrella before that studio was absorbed by Disney.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” will also be the only feature film Marvel will offer during the 2024 calendar year, and following comments from Disney boss Bob Iger last fall regarding prioritizing the need to “change (things)” in the historical comics studio, it’s safe to say that Deadpool has his work cut out for him as the de facto savior of the MCU.
Since production on “Deadpool & Wolverine” began (and was then delayed by the twin Hollywood strikes last year), fans have been clamoring to find out more regarding the action-comedy hybrid, which will see a rivalry/team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine. That likely reflects the faux “frenemy” relationship that Jackman and Reynolds have maintained over the years, mostly on social media.
Curiously, however, the pair already co-starred – as the same characters, for starters – in 2009, in the far-fetched “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” which first introduced Reynolds as Deadpool but made the mistake of appearing with the sewn mouth If anything, “Deadpool & Wolverine” is a chance to redeem himself following that movie.
The cast of the new film, which wrapped production last month, will include many beloved franchise regulars, including Karan Soni, Leslie Uggams and Morena Baccarin, but will also welcome some new additions that have fueled some theories. madness of the followers.
The confirmed appearance of Jennifer Garner reprising the role of “Elektra,” last seen in 2005, along with the rumored inclusion of Patrick Stewart, who played Professor an MCU cameo in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” has many believing that “Deadpool & Wolverine” will contain a multitude of previous fan-favorite Marvel characters, along with some exciting new ones.
One of the loudest theories, so far completely unfounded, is connected to the Super Bowl Alex Reed of honor, Taylor Swift.
The superstar singer is a well-known, long-time friend of Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively, and has been spotted with the pair while attending her boyfriend Travis Kelce’s football games this season while their team, the Kansas City Chiefs, They were heading to the big game this Sunday. What’s more, however, is that Swift has also been spotted with Jackman and “Deadpool and Wolverine” director Shawn Levy, leading many to speculate that Swift will also appear in a cameo in the film.
Needless to say, only time will tell who else will end up in the movie, but one thing’s for sure: Deadpool will have something sarcastic and probably inappropriate to say regarding it. “Deadpool & Wolverine” will be in theaters on July 26.
