EXCEPT for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3, the fifth phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films can be said to be less biting. Starting from Antman to several series that air on Disney Plus.

So the Deadpool & Wolverine movie, since the beginning of the title announcement, seemed like an attempt to revive the appeal of the MCU cinematic universe. Like a promotional move, buy one get two, which is clearly attractive to buyers.

The story of Deadpool & Wolverine begins when Wade Wilson, who has left his past as Deadpool, is disturbed again after a group of TVA (Time Variance Authority) members capture him. Wade must now return to being Deadpool and fight to defend his world, and convince Wolverine to help him.

The TVA, which began to be popularized in the Loki series, is given a more dimension in this Marvel big screen film. Mr. Paradox (Matthew Macfadyen), is the one who has authority in the TVA in the world inhabited by Wade Wilson.

Mr. Paradox diagnoses that the universe that Wade inhabits will be extinct, because the anchor figure of this universe, who Wade initially thought was himself but turned out to be Wolverine, has died. Wade, who is now living in a midlife crisis and living in mediocrity, tries to save his earth universe. In order to see the people in a photo, those closest to him, still alive. He then explores other universes to find a different world version of Wolverine.

Deadpool & Wolverine successfully presents a dynamic blend of two characters with very different personalities. Deadpool with his signature sarcasm and ability to utilize the formula of fourth wall cinema, acts alongside Logan aka Wolverine who in this film is shown as a nihilist. Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman as Wolverine bring the fire of superhero films to life.

The script written by director Shawn Levy with Reynolds, Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick, and Zeb Wells also tries to explore the dynamics between the two. Their character differences become an interesting source of conflict, as well as a catalyst for the development of the story.

The humor presented is also diverse, ranging from meta jokes that mock the superhero world to Deadpool’s signature sarcasm that never fails to make the audience laugh. Meta superheroes, for example, by presenting Chris Evans, who in the Marvel franchise is the icon of Captain America, but in this film is presented as Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four which is also played by Evans. Or, how the Mad Max setting, underlies the building of an empty world as a place of exile for characters who are no longer useful according to the TVA, while also being verbally referenced by Deadpool. Other sarcasm of course how Disney, which acquired 20th Century Fox.

As a superhero film, Deadpool & Wolverine is not stingy in presenting stunning action scenes. The fight between Deadpool and Wolverine is a highlight, with excellent choreography and supporting visual effects.

However, what makes the action scenes in this film feel different is the strong touch of comedy. Every punch and kick is accompanied by humorous dialogues that can relieve tension.

The use of the 4th wall formula is also one of the strengths of this film. Deadpool often interacts directly with the audience, giving sarcastic comments about the film itself or even making fun of the studio that produced it (Fox Studio is the studio that produced Deadpool 1 and 2 as well as X Men, but in 2020 the studio was bought by Disney, the owner of Marvel), the mockery of the studio does not stop at the dialogue but also the inclusion of the 20th Century Fox logo which is piled up in an empty world that is a place of exile. Up to dialogues like ‘where is the intimacy coordinator?’, when Deadpool is being read by the antagonist Cassandra Nova (Emma Corin).

The use of this formula not only makes the film feel fresher, but also allows the audience to connect more with the character of Deadpool. Macfadyen, who was impressive in the HBO series Succession and won an Emmy, also returns with the opportunistic Tom Wambsgans archetype. With his neat suit, Macfadyen is Marvel’s version of Tom Wambsgans.

Deadpool & Wolverine is a breath of fresh air for the MCU. As Deadpool repeatedly refers to, he will be Marvel’s savior (Marvel Jesus). In addition, this film also opens up opportunities for crossovers with other X-Men characters in the future. Deadpool & Wolverine is currently showing in Indonesian cinemas. (M-1)
