Deadly Train Derailment in Sindh, Pakistan: 15 Killed and 45 Injured

At least 15 people were killed and 45 injured when a train derailed in the southern province of Sindh, Pakistan Railways Minister Rafiq said on the 6th. Sindh provincial government spokesman Sarjeel Memon said 19 people were confirmed dead and more than 50 were injured.

Agence France-Presse reported that Railways Minister Rafique (Khawaja Saad Rafique) told reporters: “This is a very serious accident. Rescue teams have arrived on the scene. At least 15 passengers are known to have died and 45 were injured. More Rescue teams have been dispatched to the scene of the accident.”

Local media reported that the derailment happened near the Sahara railway station in Nawabshah city in the southern Sindh province.

Railway official Mohsin Syal told Pakistani mediaHUM News: “Eight carriages of the Hazara Express from Karachi to Abbottabad derailed.”

Several passengers were killed and a rescue train was dispatched to the scene, Sindh Railway official Ijaz Shah told AFP.

According to photos released by local media, at least one car was seen overturned at the scene of the accident. Dozens of people were at the scene, some of whom were smashing windows and helping passengers climb out of the twisted and deformed car.

Due to the outdated railway system, railway accidents and derailments occur frequently in Pakistan. In June 2021, two trains collided near Daharki in Sindh Province, killing at least 65 people and injuring regarding 150 others. In this accident, an express train derailed and rushed onto the opposite track. About 1 minute later, the compartment of the derailed train was cut through by another high-speed passenger train. Additionally, in October 2019, at least 75 passengers were killed when a Tezgam express train caught fire following a cooking gas tank exploded. In 2005, more than 100 people were killed when two trains collided in Ghotki.
