Atingal: A youth died following being beaten up by a gang of drug dealers. Sreejith (Appu-25), son of deceased Surendran, was killed at Chiratamanakad house near Vakkam Puthannat temple.

The incident took place around 10 pm on Wednesday at the rubber plantation in Elakara near Anuppara Arattukadav in Edaikode. Police said it was not clear what led to the murder.

The police got the indication that financial transactions related to drug trade and women issues were the cause. Police are interrogating four people in connection with the incident. Rahul and Akhilkrishna, natives of Avanvanchery, Vysakh and Satish, natives of Vakkam, are being interrogated by the police.

The police concluded that the murder was carried out by a gang that included the head of a drug trafficking gang accused in several criminal cases. The drug trade and violence gang is active in Urupoyka Mangatumula. According to the police, Vineet alias Kurian is the leader of this gang.

He is closely associated with hard criminals and involved in many criminal cases. Sreejith, who was killed, is a member of Kurian’s gang. The police believe that Pranav, known as Vineeth, Kumpi, Sreejith, known as Jithu, and Vijith are behind the murder. All four are now absconding. Their mobile phones are also switched off.

Kurian Kodum criminal: Viruthan to escape from the case
Attingal: The police have revealed that Vijith Kurian, whom the police believe to be the mastermind behind the murder of Sreejith at Chirattamanakkat house near Vakkam Puthannat temple, is directly involved in many criminal incidents. Although he is involved in many cases, he has been caught in only a handful of cases.

Recently, he was arrested by the police in a case of bombing a marriage house in Perurkada. Kurian was released from jail two weeks ago. Recently his grandmother passed away. On this day, all the criminals associated with him came home. Many of them clashed with each other there. There was also a conflict with some locals. Three people including the leader of SFI were cut that day. However, it is indicated that some people intervened and hushed up this incident.

Trade with children

Kurian maintains a close friendship with the police officers. He gets away with many cases by using this relationship.

After selling drugs to children, they are handed over to the police. When caught by the police, he runs to the rescue. The family of the children will be informed that they can file a case by paying the police officers. The children who are ‘rescued’ in this way are then used by him as carriers and they are added to the gang.

The gang’s source of income is the retailing of intoxicants including cannabis and MDMA. Locals say that not a single member of his group, including Kurian, goes to work. But most of them lead a luxurious life.

Mangatumula is a favorite haven for drug-criminal gangs
Atingal: Mangatumula near Uruppoika is a favorite haunt of drug-criminal gangs. Mangalapuram, Attingal and Pothankot police stations share the border here. When the police come to check any station, the criminal gangs move to the next and escape. It is also an area with many escape routes.

The Pothankot murder was due to a feud related to the drug trade in Mankatumula Colony. The murder took place on December 11, 2021. Sudheesh (35) was killed in Chembakamangalam Lakhveed Colony. The group that killed Sudhish inside Sajeev’s house in Kallur Pananvila in broad daylight, cut off one of his legs and threw him on the road. Following this incident, the police intensified surveillance in Mangattumula and Chembakamangalam areas and arrested all those with criminal backgrounds. With this, the criminal gangs came out of Mangatumula Colony.

It is indicated that the criminal group is currently meeting in the Kaita forest near the banks of Mamam Ar in Anuppara. The police have received information that there are also facilities for using intoxicants and resting here. The trade and trafficking of intoxicants including ganja is concentrated here. Locals say that many people come here to buy drugs from different places.

The gang is controlled by Vineeth known as Kurian. The information received by the police is that the group led by Vineeth also killed Sreejith, a native of Vakkam, on Wednesday.

Due to the threat posed by drug dealers, the livelihood of the people of Mankatumula, Anuppara and Urupoika areas has been destroyed. Locals say that the gang has been fighting because of violence such as beatings on festival grounds, traveling in vehicles with weapons in broad daylight, threatening people by entering shops, stopping lone travelers at night and extorting money, and harassing women.
