At least one person was killed as a result of heavy rains and continuous floods Monday in the northeastern United States, according to the authorities announced.

Flood warnings were issued in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts and Vermont, and the National Weather Service warned that the floods might be “deadly.”

A state of emergency was declared in Vermont and many counties in New York state, including Orange County, where authorities confirmed that bad weather had caused one victim.

Vermott State Police released this video with a warning of “dangerous, life-threatening flooding across the state today.”

On Monday morning, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a warning attached to a satellite video for the New England region in the United States.

The victim, according to media outlets, was a woman who died while trying to leave her home with her dog in the Hudson Valley when she was swept away by the water.

In Vermont, where “flash flooding occurs” according to the Meteorological Department, Governor Phil Scott’s office said it has placed rapid response teams “in strategic locations across the state, in case their assistance with evacuations and rescues is needed.”

Heavy rains fell Sunday in New York state, causing “life-threatening” floods that turned roads into waterways that swept away bridges, destroyed parts of roads and trapped people in their cars.

State Governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency in Orange County, northwest of New York City, and in central Ontario, noting that up to 200 millimeters of rain created “life-threatening flooding” conditions.

“We are approaching a dangerous phase in these weather conditions,” she said.

More than 12,000 customers lost power on Sunday night, her office said.

Highway closures were closed Sunday evening in at least five counties in the state, including Westchester, which lies just north of New York and along the Hudson River.

As of 5:30 am, Amtrak has suspended lines between the state capital, Albany, and New York City “due to inclement weather,” according to a statement.

And the Meteorological Department warned of the possibility of heavy rain once more Monday and “until Tuesday”, and other flash floods are possible.
