Deadly Fire Claims 67 Lives on Maui Island: Latest Updates and Rescue Efforts

2023-08-12 00:12:19

The provisional toll of the fire that almost razed a town on the American island of Maui now stands at 67 dead, authorities in the Hawaiian archipelago announced on Friday. “Undoubtedly there will be more deaths,” the Hawaii governor warned.

Maui County announced ’12 additional deaths’ in a statement. The new death toll of 67 is even deadlier than the 1960 tsunami, which killed 61 people on the island of Hawaii.

Federal authorities must deploy dogs to assist rescuers in the search for possible corpses under the rubble.
