Thursday April 6, 2023. A landscape worthy of Cézanne parades through the tinted windows of the three sedans of the Marseille judicial police. Bumper to bumper, sirens blaring, unmarked cars leave the highway and rush into a residential area of Gardanne. They enter a cul-de-sac lined with opulent pavilions, swimming pool option and terraces facing south, and line up in front of a pretty three-story house, with red tiles and white shutters. A wooden terrace, a swimming pool overlooked by a majestic tree as tall as the house, deck chairs and a garden table invite you to a sweet Provençal rest.
11:35 a.m. “Judicial Police” vests flocked to their backs, seven investigators from the criminal brigade, accompanied by two dogs specializing in the search for weapons and narcotics, cross the white gate and take the gravel path which crosses the small garden. Among them, supervised by two brigadiers, handcuffed and monitored like a high-level criminal, a puny kid measuring 1.70 meters is preparing to return to his mother. The young man’s forehead is eaten away by acne and his cheeks are hidden by a poorly trimmed goatee, his long black hair falls to his lower back. Hidden under his jacket, he looks like a high school student who loves hard rock like so many others. However Matéo, 18, is suspected of having murdered, three days earlier, two teenagers in front of a snack bar in the Joliette district, near the Old Port of Marseille.
For hours, investigators combed through the 140 square meter pavilion. They found nothing on the ground floor, went up to the first floor and inspected a child’s bedroom, occupied by the youngest, then they searched the library and the laundry room. Still nothing. They finally enter Matéo’s room, a room of around 8 square meters, roughly furnished: a single bed, a table, a small bookcase… The cupboards are strangely empty of any clothes. The police turn to Matéo: “They are now in my brother’s room Enzo [le prénom a été modifié]. » Indeed, in young Enzo’s room, clothes litter the floor and the bed. Two pairs of sneakers attracted the attention of investigators, green, pink and purple Nike TNs. They are sizes 38.5 and 39, Matéo’s size, who immediately recognizes them and says:
