An explosion occurred late in the afternoon at the hydroelectric plant of the artificial lake Suviana, in the Apennine Mountains of Bologna.
According to the prefecture of Bologna, the current toll is three dead, five seriously injured and three missing, while three people were rescued.
Corriere della Sera reports that the accident happened below the water level, on the ninth floor at a depth of 30 meters, in the area of transformers, where workers were working. The Prefecture of Bologna emphasizes that the dam is not affected by the fire, which concerns a generator at the power station.
The Fire Department is citing a lot of smoke and difficulties accessing the facilities, the causes of the explosion are still unknown and the facilities seem to have been flooded with water.
The mayor of Bologna rushed to the scene, while the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani gave reason to follow the developments with concern.
