Deadly Clashes in Rohingya Refugee Camps: Latest Updates & Testimony Collection by ICC Prosecutor

Six members of the Rohingya community were killed in clashes in refugee camps in Bangladesh hours after a visit by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) to collect testimony, police said on Friday.

Around 750,000 members of the Rohingya community fled to Bangladesh in 2017 from a Myanmar military crackdown, which is the subject of separate proceedings before the ICC, and for “acts of genocide” before the International Court of Justice (ICJ ).

This violence is the latest in a series of deadly clashes between members of the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA) and the Rohingya Solidarity Organization (RSO), two rival formations active in the refugee camps.

According to local newspaper Prothom Alo, that person, Ebadullah, 27, had mentored refugees to meet with ICC prosecutor Karim Khan, who visited the camps on Thursday afternoon to collect testimonies on the 2017 crackdown in Burma.

ARSA did not react immediately to these killings, but the group has been accused in the past of attacking Rohingya civilian officials questioning its authority.

Dozens of people have been killed since the start of the year in clashes in Rohingya refugee camps, including women and children.

Funding cuts have forced the UN to cut rations in these camps twice in recent months, with aid workers warning this could further worsen a very precarious security situation.

Bangladesh and Burma have revived efforts to begin repatriating these refugees to their countries of origin, where this minority denied citizenship has suffered decades of persecution.
