Dubai, United Arab Emirates (CNN) – The Syrian authorities, through the country’s Minister of Health, Hassan Ghobash, updated the death toll from the attack that targeted the graduation ceremony of military college students in Homs on Thursday, bringing it to 81 dead, including 31 women and 5 children, and the number of injuries reached 81. About 239 injured, pointing out that this toll is not final.
No party has yet claimed responsibility for the attack, while the Syrian Ministry of Defense, in a previous statement, accused “terrorist organizations supported by known international parties.”
The Syrian Armed Forces described the attack as “unprecedented” and pledged to respond “with full force and determination,” warning that those who planned and carried out the attack “will pay dearly.”
It is noteworthy that the old city of Homs, which was formerly known as the capital of the Syrian revolution, was the scene of fierce battles between regime forces and opposition fighters who sought to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad in 2012, and the city fell into the hands of the regime after a two-year siege, when armed groups left it in 2014.
