More than 45 people, including 23 children, were killed yesterday in a brutal attack on a camp for internally displaced people in Ituri Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to initial reports. Along with that, 7 people including 3 children were injured. When those who have left their homes and are on the streets reach the camps for a little comfort, the brutal attack they face there also shocks the conscience of the world.
Apart from the dead and injured, the attackers set fire to more than 800 shelters and stole livestock. Lack of human security and protection of children is becoming an ever-greater concern. Ituri now ranks second among the country’s 26 provinces in the number of serious violations once morest children monitored by the United Nations.
While UNICEF-led voluntary organizations are providing necessary assistance to those injured in the attack, the government has been requested to identify the attackers and strengthen the protection of children and their families.
