On Friday evening it will become clear how many parties will participate in the national council elections on September 29. Nominations must be submitted to state election authorities by 5 p.m. The five parliamentary parties ÖVP, SPÖ, FPÖ, Greens and NEOS as well as KPÖ and BIER have gone to the polls in all nine federal states. A little list of more that I didn’t collect until the last minute.
The signatures of three members of the National Assembly are enough to inaugurate a parliamentary party. Parties that cannot rely on this must collect signatures from 100 to 500 eligible voters, depending on the size of the federal state, for a total of at least 2,600.
This goal has been achieved by the KPÖ, which collected the required signatures on July 25, while the Beer Party announced the collection the next day.
Other smaller parties are trying to recruit supporters until the last minute. The Petrovich List should have a good chance of competing nationally: the list was founded by former Green Party leader and critic of Covid measures Madeleine Petrovich and, among other things, comes from the “GGI Initiative” (originally “The Greens oppose compulsory vaccination and 2G”) ”, now “The Greens are campaigning in eight federal states according to their own information, the Association for Fundamental Rights and Freedom of Information. Collection efforts are still ongoing in Salzburg, but leaders recently expressed optimism that they will be able to collect the necessary signatures there, too, to participate in the national vote.
When asked by the APA, “Wandel,” who hopes to appear on the ballot as “NOT,” was optimistic about nationwide participation. According to their own statements, the Gaza List and the MFG have been included in at least some federal states. .
“Yellow Team” is certainly not popular across the country. Only “Die Gelben Burgenland”, helmed by former FPÖ politician Manfred Kölly, will compete in the easternmost federal state. The “Service Party” is also still collecting.
The “Best of Austria” list has been eliminated. Leading candidate David Packer feels state institutions are “literally terrified”. The exact meaning of this sentence was not clarified in the statement. The “Democratic Alternatives” list, as requested by the APA, also did not appear. The “DUO” list of self-proclaimed Austrian independents could not be contacted.
