After (very) long years of development, Dead Island 2 is finally available. If its release is almost a miracle, it is now time to see how the game runs on our consoles. It is as usual the experts of Digital Foundry who deliver their detailed technical analysis of the different versions of the game.

Similar Xbox Series X and PS5 versions

If we were used to seeing the PS5 enjoy a slight advantage over the latest games released, Dead Island 2 offers similar performance on both media. The game also offers no graphics mode and aims for 60 frames per second on both consoles.

On Xbox Series X, it runs at 1728p resolution, at 60 FPS. Digital Foundry points out slight and rare framerate drops in some cases, but the game runs very well on Microsoft’s console overall.

The PS5 also offers a resolution of 1728p, with a stable framerate at 60 FPS. The graphical fidelity between the two machines is identical, so Xbox and PlayStation gamers should enjoy the same gaming experience.

The Xbox Series S runs for its part in 1080p and also aims for 60 FPS. Rare falls as well as a degradation of the resolution of the shadows are mentioned, but in general, the experience is considered very good on the small console from Microsoft.

Old-gen versions also very good!

With games slated for both new and old generation consoles, we usually see old-gen machines lagging behind. This is not the case with Dead Island 2 which shows satisfactory performance, even on Xbox One and PS4.

On Xbox One, the game runs at 900p with a stable framerate of 30 FPS. The PS4 version runs at 1080p, also with a framerate of 30 FPS. The Xbox One X and PS4 Pro aim for a resolution of 1440p, and also hold 30 frames per second without too many problems. Note that the graphic settings between all these old-gen versions are identical, only the resolution changes.

It should also be remembered that despite these satisfactory performances, only Xbox Series X | S, PS5, Xbox One X and PS4 Pro players can create co-op sessions. If you are playing on Xbox One or PS4, you will only be able to join a previously created session. Dambusters Studios has already announced that it is working on a solution to this problem, but it is not available when the game launches.

Below is the full analysis from Digital Foundry. Dead Island 2 is available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC as well as Xbox Series X|S and PS5. If you want to buy the game, you will find all the editions available at the best price below. Our complete test is also accessible at this address.
