The blue flags were temporarily “taken down” from the six beaches, due to the unprecedented phenomenon of dead fish, which is observed on the shores of Pagasitikos and which is ongoing.
The decision to display the blue flags is temporary and has been taken with the aim of protecting both bathers and the “Blue Flag 2024” program of the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature. The submission of the Blue Flag concerns the coasts of Plakes, Anavros, Alykes, Amfanon, Amaryllis and Kritharia.
The Blue Flags program will resume for all the coasts of the Municipality when the phenomenon is controlled, the suitability of the bathing waters is ensured and always in communication with the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature.
The phenomenon, based on the announcements of the local authorities, is due to the sluice gate of Lake Karla through which the fish of the lake pass into the Pagasitiko Gulf and die due to a change in the salinity of the water. The local authorities have already announced a series of measures, the implementation of which is expected to control the phenomenon.
An urgent preliminary investigation has been launched into the matter in order to establish the causes of the unprecedented event. The investigation, under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor, will be carried out in special laboratories and samples will be taken both from the dead fish and from the mouth of Lake Karla in Volos to find the cause of death. The possibility that some substance has entered the body of the fish will also be examined.
In addition, the quality of the water will be checked. The research will be done along the entire coastline of Pagasitikos where the dead fish are found.
