At least four people have died and several others are still missing in the Himalayas following an avalanche occurred during the passage of a group of 41 climbers on Tuesday, a statement issued by a mountaineering institute in northern India said.
The statement said that the group includes 34 trainees and seven coaches.
The Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, an institute of the Indian Ministry of Defense, said in the statement that four bodies had been recovered, and officials from disaster response teams from the state, federal government and Indian Air Force were combing the area.
“The Indian Air Force is conducting an aerial reconnaissance of the mountain where the accident occurred,” Ashok Kumar, police chief of Uttarakhand, said by telephone. Getting to the site is not easy.
The trainees were on their way back from the top of Mount Draupadi Ka Danda-2 at an altitude of 5,670 meters in the northern state of Uttarakhand.
