De Rossi will be the fourth world champion to coach in the Italian second division

Rome (AFP) – Daniele De Rossi, the former Roma midfielder and Italy World Cup winner in 2006, has signed with second-tier club Spal to supervise him in his first assignment in the training field, as the latter announced officially on Tuesday.

Spal club said on its official website that De Rossi “signed a contract until June 30, 2024” and posted on his social media accounts a picture alluding to a famous tattoo on the calf of the former international player.

De Rossi, 39, will replace Roberto Venturato, who was sacked following the team’s last loss to Frosinone 0-2 last Saturday, noting that Spal is currently ranked 14th in the second division.

De Rossi became the fourth player to win the World Cup in Germany in 2006, supervising the training of a second-tier club in Italy following Fabio Grosso (Frosinone), Filippo Inzaghi (Regina) and Fabio Cannavaro (Benevento), noting that another world champion in 2006 defends Parma club color in “Serie B” is the legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

De Rossi (117 caps with Italy) retired from football in January 2020 following a brief experience with Argentina’s Boca Juniors, following he retired from international football in November 2017 following failing to qualify for the World Cup in Russia 2018.
