TORONTO (AP) — Alex de Minaur defeated second-seeded Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (7), 7-5 on Friday to advance to the semifinals of the Toronto Open.

“I had to play some of my best tennis today,” Australian De Minaur said. “It’s been a great week for me so far. I played well today. I think playing him towards the end of last year gave me confidence that I had a chance. I just had to play it the right way. I am very proud of my effort and staying alive.”

Russian Medvedev, who was crowned in 2021 in Toronto, incurred seven double faults, the last on match point during a warm and sunny afternoon at Sobeys Stadium.

De Minaur will face Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in a battle of unseeded players playing in his first Masters 1000 semifinal. In March, De Minaur triumphed in Acapulco for his seventh career title.

Davidovic Fokina defeated American Mackenzie McDonald 6-4, 6-2 in the first meeting of the quarterfinals.

In the night session, the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz (first seed), faced the American Tommy Paul (12th) and the Italian Jannik Sinner (7th) collided with the French Gael Monfils.
