De Lijn has decided to take action following the incident on December 5, during which a 16-year-old girl was stuck between the doors of a De Lijn school bus for several kilometers, announces the Flemish transport company public Monday.
Remember this story which caused a lot of talk in Flanders. It was last December. The incident took place on line 503, in Flemish Brabant. As the victim attempted to get into the vehicle, the bus doors closed, trapping one of her legs while she was still outside.
The bus then started once more. As the door blocking her leg had not closed properly, the teenager managed to hold on to the inside side of the door. The bus then drove for approximately four kilometers until it stopped. The young girl had some bruises.

Tests were conducted following the incident. These demonstrated that the security works well all the time, except when the doors are “force closed”. Such a system allows the doors to be closed even when passengers are in front of the optical sensors, for example when the bus is already full.
“De Lijn is now in contact with the manufacturer to have the software adjusted so that passenger protection is ensured even in the event of forced closing of the doors,” the public transport company said in a press release. “While awaiting the modifications, the necessary measures have already been taken so that the drivers in charge of the school services concerned (…) can only automatically close the doors, with the usual security therefore.”
