De Lijn has launched the procedures to buy hundreds of electric buses, possibly up to 1,250 units, the Flemish public transport company said on Wednesday. The company is looking for all kinds of formats, ranging from eight to 24 meters long.
De Lijn wants to make its entire fleet of more than 2,000 vehicles emission neutral by 2035. Hundreds of buses therefore need to be replaced, while electric has so far been the exception rather than the rule. A framework agreement has already been signed with the suppliers Van Hool and VDL for a maximum of 350 electric buses. The first 60 must be provided at the end of the year.
The Flemish company has also initiated a procedure to order up to 1,250 zero-emission buses of different types. For this first phase, it is a question of looking for potential candidates. Concrete offers will follow later.
