DC Health Partners with BVSPCA to Enhance Animal Welfare Services

Washington, DC — In an exciting development for the welfare of animals across the city, DC Health has proudly unveiled a new collaboration with the Brandywine Valley SPCA (BVSPCA). Well-regarded in neighboring states for their exceptional animal care services, BVSPCA is passionately dedicated to eradicating animal suffering while fostering community involvement in promoting animal welfare. This partnership is set to significantly enhance the compassionate treatment and services offered to animals within the District.

“We are proud to bring our expertise in animal care, progressive sheltering policies, and lifesaving programs to the nation’s capital,” stated Adam Lamb, CEO of Brandywine Valley SPCA, expressing enthusiasm about this initiative. “I want to personally thank Mayor Bowser, Dr. Bennett, and the entire DC Health team for championing this swift transition, which will allow us to expand and modernize the overall standards of care and services available for animals and pet families in the District. We encourage community engagement and support for our mission through volunteering, fostering, adopting, and donating. Together, we can make a difference.”

Key Highlights:

  • Partnership with BVSPCA: DC Health has finalized a contract with Brandywine Valley SPCA, whose mission is to actively advocate on behalf of animals by reintegrating the essence of “human” back into humane treatment.
  • Immediate Actions: In response to current needs, a temporary shelter will be rapidly established to manage overflow from the New York Avenue facility, ensuring animals are appropriately cared for as this transition unfolds.
  • Future: DC Health is proactively searching for ideal locations for a new, permanent animal shelter, aimed at addressing the escalating demands of the community and its animal population.

“Brandywine Valley SPCA has been an exceptional ally in crafting a forward-thinking vision for animal services in DC,” remarked Dr. Ayanna Bennett, Director of DC Health. “I am thrilled to collaborate with them in revitalizing our animal services program and actualizing Mayor Bowser’s vision of a modernized and expanded DC Animal Shelter. Our mission is to guarantee safe, high-quality care for all animals while establishing sustainable solutions that will benefit the community for years into the future.”
