• Integration: the big ones UEMOA meeting

The last months of the year within the West African Economic and Monetary Union will be marked by major events. The month of November concentrates three:

– the Union businessmen’s forum, coupled with the UEMOA Quality Prize which will be held in Dakar, from November 16 to 18, 2023;

– the International Mining, Energy and Hydrocarbons Exhibition, scheduled for November 27 to 29, 2023, in Abidjan;

– the round table of technical and financial partners for financing the Energy Pole Development Strategy and the Regional Digital Economy Development Program, in Abidjan, in the same period from November 27 to 29, 2023.

In order to succeed in these major meetings, the UEMOA Commission initiated information and mobilization meetings for stakeholders in the countries of the Union. Ouagadougou hosted its own meeting on October 23, under the presidency of the Minister of Economy, Finance and Foresight, represented by Boukaré Zouanga. On behalf of the minister, he invited public and private actors, representatives of organizations, institutions and national and international structures present in Faso to mobilize to better represent.

The Commissioner in charge of the Department of Business Development, Mines, Energy and the Digital Economy, Dr Paul Koffi Koffi, represented the Commission. For him, the organization of these events demonstrates the Commission’s desire to strengthen the economic integration process and promote sustainable development in the community area. He invited all stakeholders to contribute to the success of the said events.

• Regional security: ministers in consultation

The ministers responsible for security issues from the member states of the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) met by videoconference on October 27, 2023. On the menu: analysis of recent developments in the security situation in the Union. The Report for the first half of 2023 on peace and security in the UEMOA area, as well as the status of implementation of the Project for computerization and interconnection of border police stations.

The conclusions of the work of the ministers will be submitted to the 6e meeting of the high-level committee on the peace and security project in the UEMOA area which will take place in Dakar and chaired by Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, president of the said Committee.

• Public companies: a study day on their status

Understanding the issues surrounding the transformation of public companies in Burkina Faso, through reflection on the coherence and effectiveness of the regulations applicable to them, is the general objective of a study day in preparation for the level of the National Academy of Sciences, Arts and Letters of Burkina Faso (ANSAL-BF) and managed by the SJPEG college (Legal, political, economic and management sciences). The theme of the day scheduled for November 16 is “changes in public companies in Burkina Faso”.

• Locally produced oil: consumers question its scarcity on the market

A government inquiry on the page of a consumer defense association: “There is a serious shortage of 5 liter and 20 liter oil cans in our markets and shops…Yet these products are the cheapest in the world. walk ! We are calling on SN-CITEC, which we will officially contact very quickly…We are calling on the government regarding the risks of speculation and an explosion in the prices of edible oils.” It’s an antiphon that comes back every year. The leading production company in the sector seems to be the victim of poor distribution of cotton seed. For example, last campaign, it only had access to 39,000 tonnes of seed out of a need three to four times greater. Which equates to just three months of production. Other producers have access to the seed, but their finished products remain invisible on the market, when cotton seeds are not the subject of external speculation. A study by the Ministry of Commerce had pinpointed the distribution of cotton seed and the use made of it by beneficiaries. It may be time to review the management of cotton seeds.o
