Davos will play the Spengler Cup final for the first time since 2012. Graubünden qualified thanks to their 4-3 victory after extra time against the Swedes of Frölunda.
The Finn Henrik Haapala crucified the Scandinavians after 51” of overtime with a tumble down the left wing. The Lausanne HC player, who had passed through Genève-Servette at the start of the season, was one of the best Davosians throughout the tournament in the Graubünden resort.
In the final, coach Josh Holden’s players will face the Czechs from Pardubice on Sunday at 12:10 p.m.
The Swedes of Henrik Tömmernes had played the day before and had inflicted a “spanking” on Ambri-Piotta (5-0) while Davos was resting. But the Scandinavians never seemed tired throughout the game. They even led 2-1 in the 23rd minute after a solitary exploit from Carl Klingberg, the former Zougois, who circled the cage before deceiving Sandro Aeschlimann. Alas, Graubünden equalized 90 seconds later through Rasmussen, who had already scored twice against Frölunda in the preliminary round (4-1).
Enzo Corvi put Davos back in the lead (36th) before Stromwall surprised Aeschlimann between the pads (53rd). But the extension quickly turned in favor of Graubünden.
