The new SSR and ARD series “Davos 1917”, broadcast on RTS Un and on Play Suisse, offers a spy thriller in the middle of the First World War in a sanatorium in Graubünden.

In 1917, at the heart of the First World War, a Red Cross nurse, Johanna Gabathuler, played by Dominique Devenport, returns from the front to work at her parents’ sanatorium in her native village of Davos.

Despite the quiet appearance of the resort, an international clientele with sometimes dubious intentions flocks to Switzerland, a neutral country by obligation. In this context, Johanna Gabathuler falls under the influence of a mysterious countess, who turns out to be a German spy. Forced to spy for the latter, the nurse finds herself plunged into a world of intrigue and danger.

The series “Davos 1917” is inspired by real events. “Switzerland was an island in the middle of the rival parties in this conflict. And because it was neutral at that time, it was the breeding ground for espionage activities by all parties,” explains director Jan-Eric Mack, Thursday in the 7:30 p.m. of RTS.

And screenwriter Adrian Illien adds: “At that time, all the belligerents had a consulate in Davos. They fought each other on the ground, but in Davos, everyone rubbed shoulders diplomatically. And that’s really where he Something was happening.”

Facing the cold

Outdoor photography took place in Davos and the Engadine in temperatures down to minus 20 degrees. “There were several moments on this shoot where the cold became almost unbearable. The pain of the snow on the bare hands. And the feet. We had to forget,” says lead actress Dominique Devenport, who also played the Empress Sissi in the German-Austrian series of the same name.

In total, 18 million francs were invested in the production of six episodes, in co-production with German television ARD. A large budget was necessary to immersively recreate the espionage intrigues in Davos at the beginning of the 20th century.
