David Savard’s Future in the Montreal Canadiens Organization: Trade Speculations and Potential Replacements

2023-10-15 17:59:25

At 32 years old and with two years of control (including this one), David Savard is not part of the future of the organization.

I understand that the depth on the right is thin currently, but the organization is counting on good young right-handers and young veterans who can replace the Quebecer. From the lot: Johnathan Kovacevic (26 years old), David Reinbacher (18 years old), Logan Mailloux (20 years old). Left-handers can also play on the right.

Kovacevic is currently in the NHL and he is one of the most underrated defensemen on the team. The other three are not, but they will soon make the jump to the NHL. In the case of a guy like Bogan Konyushkov (20), he has a contract in Russia, but he is a great prospect.

What this means for Savard, therefore, is that he is not necessarily guaranteed a full-time position within the Montreal defensive brigade of the future. Marco D’Amico even believes he might generate some interest at the next trade deadline.

A defenseman like that might attract the attention of a few teams aspiring to the Stanley Cup. If Montreal is in a playoff race, I believe Kent Hughes will keep him, but if not, he might very well part with him.

Don’t expect the moon in return for 58’s services, but a fourth-round pick is reasonable.

With two years left on his contract, we shouldn’t expect the GM to withhold money either. Montreal is already retaining the salaries of Joel Edmundson (2023-2024) and Jeff Petry (2023-2024 and 2024-2025). Remember that a team can only retain three salaries at the same time.

One thing is certain, if Savard is traded, the depth on the right will be even thinner for the rest of the season with Kovacevic as number one and young people as defensemen two and three.

Could the Canadian be interested in Adam Boqvist?

In the same text, D’Amico wonders if the CH might be interested in the young right-handed defender, Adam Boqvist. Earlier this week, Frank Seravalli said that the Blue Jackets have a lot of right-handed defensemen in their organization chart.

Columbus would explore the option, therefore, of trading one.

Is Boqvist available? Pascal Vincent’s troupe wants to win now and if Montreal wanted to dance with it, it would have to provide elements that will help it win in 2023-2024.

We have Christian Dvorak, who can be a good third line player. And we have many choices.

In the absence of Zach Werenski last year, Adam Boqvist was put in charge of the power play and he did very well. And in Montreal, the power play needs work. And if Boqvist is acquired by Kent Hughes (a transaction like Kirby Dach and Alex Newhook), Savard’s place will be even less assured.

A lot of

– Obviously.

– I don’t think he plays another match in Montreal, this one.

– Obviously.

– Wow.

– Big victory.
