After ÖEHV talent David Reinbacher was picked fifth in the first round of the 2023 NHL draft by the Montreal Canadiens, the draft ended on Thursday with rounds two through seven.
With 17-year-old Villacher Ian Scherzer, another Austrian had the chance to be selected in this year’s talent training. The attacker was ranked 85th among European skaters by the NHL Central Scouting Service.
Ultimately, however, Scherzer, who plays in Rögle BK’s U20 team, was not picked.
This is how it goes for Scherzer
The Carinthian does not have to give up his dream of the NHL just yet, he is also eligible for the draft in the next two years.
Scherzer already had a clear plan for how to proceed in the coming years without being drafted: “I will also play for Rögle BK next season and then go to college in the USA. I want to be myself both as a player and as a person develop.”
The 17-year-old already has his place at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, where he will play for the so-called Redhawks in the NCAA college league.
