Montreal (ots/PRNewswire) Canada-based multinational shipbuilding company Davie today announced its intention to become one of the first private sector contributors to the historic trilateral agreement between the governments of Canada, Finland and the United States.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Finnish President Alexander Stubb jointly launched the trilateral “ICE Agreement” with U.S. President Joe Biden at the NATO summit in Washington. This initiative will promote cooperation to achieve more efficient, Get more results faster and…

As the world becomes increasingly volatile, NATO countries are more willing and urgent than ever to step up research, trade, energy and security cooperation in the contested polar regions. Icebreaker activities are key to achieving shared priorities. Despite the effective readiness of hostile shipbuilding industries, the Western Allies apparently lacked sufficient icebreakers and other specialized vessels. No one country can solve this challenge alone, but trusted allies with shared goals and advanced shipbuilding can.

Davie praised the partners’ vision in creating the ICE protocol. As an icebreaking expert with state-of-the-art facilities in Canada and Finland, David is uniquely qualified to make an important contribution. David’s Finnish company, Helsinki Shipyard, builds more than 50% of the world’s icebreaker fleet. David is also working in Quebec building the world’s largest polar icebreaker backlog for the Canadian government.

Demand for these difficult-to-build specialist ships is arguably at an all-time high, with more than 80 open projects in Western countries. Under the ICE agreement, global diplomatic cooperation will assist icebreaker builders in taking advantage of these opportunities.

The ICE agreement initially included three focus areas: 1. Improving information sharing; 2. Workforce development; and 3. Actively calling on partners and allies to purchase icebreakers built by Canada, the United States and Finland. Over the coming months, agreements between the partners will establish a practical framework for the implementation of the ICE protocol in each country. This also includes mechanisms for accepting new allies and partners.

The ICE Pact aims to strengthen the efficiency, resilience and competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry in partner countries. Building quality ships for domestic and export markets will enhance collective maritime power, boost economic growth and create thousands of skilled jobs.
