ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico “David Fox has big shoes to fill. Fox, who previously spent 12 years in various roles with UNM’s athletic department, has been named the new director of football operations, succeeding longtime manager Gavin Bevis.
Fox returns to Duke City following spending the previous year with Washington State in the same capacity. Prior to that, he was in Nevada for four seasons as operations manager.
“I have known David since he was part of Dennis Franchione’s team in 1995, and his knowledge of UNM and the league will be a great benefit to our staff, our coaches and our program,” said the head coach Danny Gonzales. “Gavin has been great here for almost 30 years and he knows David well. The transition has already been smooth.
Fox served as academic coordinator at UNM from 1997 to 2007, where he oversaw the maintenance of eligibility for the Lobos’ football and women’s basketball programs. Along with his academic duties, Fox also served as the Game Management Coordinator from 1998-2006. He worked as the tournament officials liaison for the 2000 NCAA Men’s Basketball West Regional and the 2002 NCAA Men’s Basketball First/ Second Rounds. Fox coordinated MW referees during football and men’s basketball games and also assisted in various game day responsibilities during home football competitions. His previous two years were as a graduate assistant on the Francione team, helping quarterbacks and receivers.
He also spent two years in the commercial real estate industry in Albuquerque, and he was media relations manager for the 2007 New Mexico Bowl, coordinating press conferences and the press box on game day, while managing a variety of scouting needs for NFL leaders. and serve as a liaison for the Mountain West and West Athletic conferences.
As director of operations, Fox will work with the head coach on travel arrangements, the training roster, budgets and planning for the press season. He will also play a key role in serving as a liaison with the main campus, representing the interests of Lobo Football.
Fox brings with him eight years of experience as a director. With Washington State and Nevada, Fox served as operations manager at Tulane for three years, serving in various similar roles.
A native of Garden City, Kan., Fox earned his Associate of Arts degree from Garden City Community College in 1988 and received his Bachelor of Arts in Biology from Drake in 1990. He received his Master of Science in Higher Education from Drake in 1994.
As a student-athlete at Drake, he was a two-year winner for the Bulldogs from 1988-89 and was voted the best defensive back by his teammates in 1989. Fox also excelled in class, receiving the Drake Academic/ Athletic Excellence. Reward in both seasons. He transferred to Drake following spending two seasons with the GCCC football team in 1986-87. He finally broke into collegiate coaching with Drake as a GA in 1990 before being hired full-time in 1992.
