Datasirkelen and Agora 41 present 5 proposals for responsible digital technology

What is the link between “data” and “living things”? At first glance, counterintuitively, this link is indeed established. Because digital data is not virtual, and it develops in a technological environment that is not unlimited.

In fact, studies today highlight the negative consequences caused to living things by the mass processing of this data, from the most expected to the most unexpected:

– depleting natural resources (with ever-increasing electricity consumption);

– pressure on natural spaces and their biodiversity (with the construction of more and more data centers, voracious in terms of land and water);

– impairment of human health (exposure to screens that promote a sedentary lifestyle, sleep disorders, cognitive fatigue, emotional dysregulation, etc.).

When you think regarding it, Gabor’s law, according to which “what can be done technically, will necessarily be done”, is not inevitable, and another model is possible: that of a “responsible” digital world, one in which the power publication would protect , for example, by examining digital products/services before they are put on the market, to verify that their impact on living things is “considered” and offset by guarantees or usage limits.

Is there still time to react? “Yes,” say the members of Data Circle and Agora 41 who wrote this study, the result of work over several years. Serious paths exist, provided you are brave.

An approach: defining, debating and proposing.

Faithful to their convictions, and placing the better understanding of concepts related to the digital universe as a central element in a civilization renewal, Data Circle and Agora 41 wanted to give their reflections on the imprint of data on the living in the form of a depth. study, as they did in 2022 on the subject of digital sovereignty (“Digital Sovereignty: essay for a reconquest”).

Remembering the importance of the data, they demonstrate that the data, far from its supposed insignificance, has a real impact, both on the environment and on health.

Once this documented observation has been made, the authors formulate five strong proposals, which encourage politicians, but also economic actors and citizens.

“This study is aimed at all those who share the need to regain control over irresponsible digital technology and want to correct the current path by choosing a thoughtful use of digital data,” summarizes Jean Martinot, Vice President of the Cercle de la Data, which coordinated this the study.

This work will be presented to a panel of parliamentarians and will be the subject of a conference at the Diderot Institute. Other presentation and debate events are planned to put this topic in the spotlight, raise awareness among decision-makers and, more generally, combat citizen indifference.
