According to data from the company specializing in cyber attacks Tenable, released by Veja magazine, 35% of virtual scams worldwide target the healthcare sector. In Brazil, the situation is even worse, as the same study revealed that, between November 2021 and October 2022, 43% of criminal leaks came from Brazilian addresses.

Therefore, with the continuous advancement of digitalization in medicine and the increase in the exchange of electronic medical information, the need to protect patient data more effectively is increasing, especially health data.

In the country, it is Lei nº 13,709, also known as the General Data Protection Law (LGPD), which monitors and regulates these issues. In case of infraction, companies must pay a fine of up to 2% (two percent) of the legal entity’s revenue, limited in total to R$50,000,000.00 (fifty million reais) for infringement.

For Richard Rivière, co-founder and CEO of the company Versatilis System, concerns about data must go far beyond financial issues: “Health data is sensitive data, which is directly related to the fundamental rights of freedom and privacy. Therefore, looking at information security is a more than urgent need in this and the coming years.”

But companies are already recognizing this need. According to data from the TIC Health 2022 survey, released by Medicina S/A Magazine, one in four public health establishments has an information security policy. This percentage increased from 30% to 39% from 2021 to 2022, mainly due to private establishments, where 50% of them have measures.

Richard further states that a promising solution to this challenge is the implementation of robust medical systemswhich employ cutting-edge technologies to protect information.

For him, these systems not only offer an additional layer of security, but improve the efficiency and accuracy of health data management. “In the Versatilis System, for example, we have tools such as data encryption and user control to prevent unauthorized access and ensure data integrity.”

With the increase in cases of information theft, in addition to adopting advanced technologies, the tendency is for healthcare professionals and establishments to focus on best data security practices.

This cybersecurity awareness and education can together contribute to a culture of data protection at all layers of the healthcare sector.
