Dashlane now lets you access your logins without a master password

The password manager Dashlane announced the launch of a new login option that eliminates the need for a master password. According to the company, this is the first time that a service of this type has added this possibility to its manager.

Interestingly, the solution implemented by Dashlane does not use the protocol created by the FIDO Alliance, responsible for developing the famous Password keys (Passkeys), to work. In fact, the company chose to continue with its own solution that, like Password Keys, uses a unique key that is stored on the user’s own device.

This key encrypts the user’s vault and can be authenticated with the help of a feature like Touch/Face ID or the device’s own passcode. They also ensure that Dashlane does not have access to this key, which is unique to each user.

According to the service, passwordless login speeds up the account setup process and facilitates the recovery process, as it is possible for the user to forget their master password. The new method is also more effective against attempts to phishingas you do not need to enter a credential in full to access your account.

For now, the new feature is only available to new users who create a Dashlane account through its iOS or Android app and subscribe to a personal plan. Passwordless login, however, will be expanded to more people in 2024.

It is worth noting that logging in without passwords is completely optional, so anyone who wants to continue using a traditional master password will continue to be able to do so. The manager also lets you save Password Keys in your vault, although as we said, you don’t use this technology for your own login.
