During their early interactions, Lily reveals to Ryle about her first love, Atlas. She met him in high school when he sought shelter in an abandoned house in her neighborhood because his mother also experienced abuse at home. When Lily’s father catches them together, he nearly beats Atlas to death.
As fate would have it, Atlas owns a restaurant in Boston, which Lily and Ryle unknowingly visit. There, Lily comes face-to-face with her first love.
At the same time, Ryle’s perfect facade begins to crumble. During a cooking accident, he accidentally gives Lily a black eye. When Atlas witnesses this, he assumes that Lily is now also experiencing domestic violence and confronts Ryle. This leads to further issues between Lily and her boyfriend. In another altercation, Lily falls down the stairs, and Ryle assures her that she fell on her own.
Slowly but surely, more and more violence creeps into their relationship. The film effectively depicts how a victim of domestic violence convinces themselves that everything was just “an accident” and finds reasons to stay with their partner.

After another incident in which Ryle attempts to sexually assault Lily, she flees to Atlas. However, at the hospital, she discovers that she is pregnant with Ryle’s child. Holding her daughter in her arms while seeing Ryle, she decides to break up with him, concluding that the cycle of abuse ends with her and her daughter. Hence: “It Ends with Us.”
The Controversy Surrounding the Film
The story, which initially appears to be a light romantic drama on the surface, actually has considerable depth. However, this fact has now become a source of criticism.
