Hundreds of people protested today in the port city of Darna in Libya, which has been badly hit by floods, calling for the removal of the local council and a unification of Libya. The Libyan TV channel al-Masar showed footage in which the demonstrators demanded that those responsible for the disaster be held accountable.
According to eyewitnesses, protesters also tried to set fire to the house of the currently suspended mayor Abdel-Moneim al-Gheithi that evening. The devastating floods also caused two dams in Darna to burst. The authorities are accused of not maintaining them properly and thus contributing to the extent of the disaster.
Darna was particularly hard hit by the flood disaster. The local authorities do not yet have exact figures on how many people fell victim to the severe floods in eastern Libya. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), around 4,000 deaths had been identified and registered with death certificates by the end of last week.
Investigations are ongoing
The Libyan public prosecutor Al-Sedik al-Sur began an investigation into the dam breaches. The dams were said to have cracked and money was said to have been allocated for maintenance. The public prosecutor now wants to clarify the whereregardings of the money. Darna’s mayor Gheithi has also been suspended from office for the time being.
Libya is effectively divided into two parts. The country has a government in the west that is internationally recognized. In the east, where Storm Daniel caused particularly great damage, a different government that is not internationally recognized is in power. “Daniel” captured Libya on September 10th.
