DARKNESS stands for many different forms! Mastermind Amalie Bruun started with a mix of black metal and folk songs, and in addition to her clear voice, heavy growls might also be heard once more and once more. On her last album, “Folkesange,” the Dane focused exclusively on Danish folk songs, but according to announcements, that will change once more on the new record, “Spine.”
The beginning is very gentle, followed by harder tones in “Like Humans”, but the vocals are clean and fit well into the rhythmic sound worlds. This is followed by “Mothlike,” for which a video was also released. Some synth tones can be heard here as a supplement, but more and more pressure is constantly building up and in between you can also hear croaking vocals, which creates a bit of an eerie flair. “My Blood Is Gold” has much of an anthem in it, and the following title track “Spine” is also extremely sonorous. In “Valkyriernes Sang” the hard metal tones take over, but little changes vocally. After further leisurely sound worlds, the album comes to an early end with the magical “Menneskebarn” – you would have liked to have listened to it longer!
Amalie Bruun simply has such an impressive voice that it doesn’t matter what the framing looks like. That’s exactly why she is loved by her fans, and so they will have a lot of fun with “Spine” because she has immortalized all facets of her singing in it, even if the growling is hardly there, as is known from the initial releases . So if you liked these records, you might be a little disappointed, for everyone else it’s time to put your feet up, turn on the device and let yourself go.
