Update (3/7/2023) – HA

Originally released in 2016, Dark Souls 3 is visually no match for next-gen games, as the series’ excellent art direction is striking enough for players to immerse themselves in its dark and fantasy settings.

Still, seven years following its launch, fans are trying to give the set a little improvement, as is the case of user Jonx0r, who shared a new video showing a recreation of the game’s initial area, Cemetery Hollows, and the fight once morest the boss Iudex Gundyr made using Unreal Engine 5ensuring a look and performance superior to the original, mainly due to the realistic lighting.

In addition, the user wanted to show how the combat mechanics of the FromSoftware title were recreated using the Tempest Combat Framework plugin.

Quite similar to the original at first glance, with some subtle changes to lighting and reflections, the video above shows the results of the experiment.

Dark Souls 3 is the latest release in the series that made FromSoftware one of the most popular Japanese development studios of all time. While the series is apparently done for now, the Japanese developer is working on new titles, which include Armored Core VI: Fire of Rubicon and the expansion Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. The former will be released in August for PC and consoles, while the latter is apparently due for 2024.

The Bonfire Lit scene is part of the Firelink Shrine or Firelink Sanctuary, in direct translation. As we can see below, the design used several areas of lighting with the Lumen tool, to ensure greater realism to the place. The image below shows all the lamps that simulate everything from the flickering of the campfire to the moonlight in the night sky.

The video published on the designer’s official YouTube channel allows us to see the complete creation:

Although this is just a scene from the game, it allows us to see how beautiful Dark Souls might be if it won a remake with Unreal Engine 5, as the title only won a remastered version in 2018 for PS4, PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

Another work that allows us to have a better idea of how Dark Souls Remake would look is the concept artist SilasCG, who put the game’s materials in the Unreal Engine and the result is simply impressive.
