Dark in the eyes? This can be a sign of an insidious disease

Šarūnas Tamašauskas, neurosurgeon at Kaunas Clinics Neurosurgery Clinic, says that this tumor, called hemangiopericytoma, is extremely rare. “This is a very rare oncological disease that can be found anywhere in the body, usually in the lower limbs, pelvic organs, lungs or brain,” says Š. Tamasauskas.

Often, patients do not even feel that they have this insidious oncological disease. “When the tumor begins to press on the brain, headaches, nausea, convulsions or weakness in the limbs may occur. Usually, only then do patients feel the first symptoms of the disease,” explains the neurosurgeon.

This oncological disease is treated surgically by performing a craniotomy – the opening of the skull. The neurosurgeons of Kaunas clinics performed an extremely complicated operation on Saul, lasting more than 10 hours, following which the tumor was removed.

Saulius says that he felt great following the operation. “After 10 years, I started noticing the same symptoms once more. I decided it’s time to get checked out,” says the patient. Unfortunately, the results of the MRI showed that the tumor had recurred, so Saul underwent another major neurosurgical operation.

Two surgeries did not stop the growth of the tumor. A multidisciplinary team of doctors decided that Sauli might benefit from stereotaxic radiosurgery, which is performed with a gamma knife.

“This treatment method is used when it is necessary to target the tumor with very precise radiation energy. The gamma knife allows you to safely reach the tumor even at such important places as the brain stem, optic and auditory nerves, says Š. Tamasauskas. “Gamma knife treatment protects healthy brain structures and the entire human body from radiation.”

The treatment of the patient with the gamma knife for the patient Saulis was performed in a week, with three treatment sessions. “After the treatment, the patient felt well, and six months later, radiological tests showed that the tumor started to shrink,” shares the neurosurgeon.

The growth of the tumor is stopped with the help of gamma knife. “Every six months I come to Kaunas clinics for an MRI, but I’m alive and feeling well,” Saulius smiles. – I am glad that the doctors of the Kaunas clinics helped me overcome the disease.

The first gamma knife center in the Baltic States was opened in Kaunas clinics in 2019. in 2022 378 patients were treated at the gamma knife center. This innovative device treats patients with brain tumors, cerebrovascular disorders, facial pain and Parkinson’s disease.
