DARIA Kasatkina beat her best friend Mirra Andreeva to become champion at the Ningbo Open.

The fifth seed from Russia beat his compatriot with a score of 6-0, 4-6 and 6-4.

Andreeva cried after the match because she threw away a 3-0 lead in the final set.

After being comforted by Kasatkina, Andreeva said, “I tried not to cry because I knew I would look very ugly in various photos. However, I couldn’t help it. I’m sorry.”

Kasatkina, who is ranked 11th in the world, appeared to be cruising through easily after winning a landslide 6-0 in the first set.

However, Andreeva, who was 17 years old, made a successful comeback and won the second set.

Andreeva then went 3-0 up in the third set before making a number of errors which were exploited well by Kasatkina, who took five games in a row and then won on serve.

Andreeva, who reached the semifinals of this year’s French Open and won a silver medal in doubles at the 2024 Paris Olympics, is chasing her second singles title.

Meanwhile, Kasatkina lost in four finals this year and Andreeva congratulated her friend on finally being able to win in the final match. (bbc/Z-1)
