Daoud Abdel Sayed: The cinema ticket is no longer for the middle class, and mall films are without a cause

Director Daoud Abdel Sayed expressed his dissatisfaction with the exaggerated increase in cinema ticket prices in the recent period, saying that cinema-goers have changed and their number has decreased, and that the audience is no longer from all classes, as “mall cinemas” have become dominant following the closure of most cinemas in Egypt’s neighborhoods Popularity, in addition to the fact that the film’s goal no longer presents an issue that sheds light on people’s concerns and problems.
During his hosting with the media, Lamis Al-Hadidi on her program “A Last Word”, director Daoud Abdel Sayed, winner of the Nile Prize for Arts, said recently that he does not consider his directorial journey to be short, although it does not exceed 9 films, stressing that he wrote the script of 8 films, considering that Each of them is like two actions.

Abdel Sayed confirmed that there are artistic projects that have not been implemented as it took time to write them, in addition to that he is not responsible for the delay in the production of some films “because the industry is responsible”, as he considered that his credit of nine films is a great reason for his happiness and he is not sad regarding that.
While Abdel Sayed revealed the reasons for his absence from the cinema, saying that it is not laziness and “but movie viewers in cinemas and galleries have changed.. that in the nineties the cinema was completely full, and all cinemas of all kinds, first class and neighborhoods, but today the situation has changed and has become The private cinemas in the first place that come with a lot of money are the cinemas of the malls, while the neighborhood cinemas have decreased, shrunk and disappeared.”
Daoud Abdel Sayed explained that the mall cinemas are large and represent only the upper middle class, stressing that the audience’s quality and interests have become different and imposed a type of film that is commercial and carefree. “The definition of concerns here is not without problems, but rather without a specific issue.”

Abdel-Sayed continued, “The new generations of filmmakers are very talented, but how do they produce their films?”
Abdel Sayed added: “Currently this generation is applying for platforms or trying to obtain support from festivals, and the question is who chooses the film in this case? The non-Egyptian financier, and therefore they present films that do not address their audience.” He continued, “In the event that the state provides support to filmmakers, it is different from the foreign financier who imposes his ideas, because the state is financed by taxes and it has to support filmmakers without imposing their opinion. This is democracy.”
In response to a question, does society now impose harsher oversight than institutional control? He said: “The current institutional censorship is the worst I’ve seen, and society is not one thing, there are the most conservative and the most liberal, but I don’t think that societal censorship is too narrow, because movie viewers are now an educated type that follows films from all over the world.”
