Danuri’s successful entry into lunar orbit… New Year’s full-fledged mission

Korea’s first lunar probe ‘Danuri’ successfully entered lunar orbit.

It landed in orbit two days earlier than originally planned, and will soon embark on a full-scale lunar exploration.

The lunar probe Danuri, made with our technology, has succeeded in reaching lunar orbit.

The Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Aerospace Research Institute announced that Danuri performed the last mission orbit entry maneuver around 11:06 am the day before yesterday, and confirmed that it successfully landed on the mission orbit yesterday.

Danuri is currently orbiting around the target orbit, 100 km above the moon, with a cycle of regarding 2 hours.

Initially, five entry maneuvers were planned, but this was reduced to three.

This is because flight data has already been perfectly secured and stability has been confirmed in the first approach maneuver.

Thanks to this, the itinerary was shortened and we arrived two days ahead of schedule.

Danuri was launched on August 5 and succeeded in its first maneuver on the 19th.

Danuri’s main mission is to observe the lunar surface.

By understanding the physical and chemical characteristics of the lunar surface, we produce the world’s first polarization map and check the distribution of minerals and resources.

Last November, we succeeded in transmitting BTS music videos and pictures of the Earth.

Searching the moon like this is to find a place where our lunar lander can directly land on the moon in the early 2030s.

Danuri will go around the moon 12 times a day for a year and select a suitable place for landing with the data sent.

Danuri plans to check the initial operation of the payload in the new year and conduct a functional test of the main body.
